ABOUT THE K9 COMMITTEE
Although neighbors have brought their dogs to Congressional Cemetery for many years, a small group started taxing themselves in the mid 90 's to help pay to mow the grass. The K9 Corps became an official organization of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery in 2007 with a Board of Directors, committees, rules and a maximum number of dogs.
The Board is comprised of 12 members, each of whom serves on at least one of the official committees:
- Grounds Committee works with Cemetery Manager Alan Davis on projects to benefit and protect the 35 3/4 acres.
- Public Relations spreads the good news about the Dogwalking program and projects at the cemetery. Dogwalkers march at Barrack's Row 4th of July parade, engage in team sports, and many other interesting endeavors.
- Website provides new copy and interesting articles on the new cemeterydogs.org.
- Fundraising promotes products that members want, t-shirts with the cemetery logo and foot prints, flashlights, unbrellas, and other products. The money raised always benefits a specific cause. In 2007, funds were raised to repair the historic Chapel windows; in 2008, a drive was held to purchase new dog/person watering fountains; in 2009, honey was donated and and t-cups were sold generating over $1000, and new garden furniture was purchased after the sale of t-shirts in 2010. The 2011 Christmas photos with Santa and t-shirt sales benefited days for stones restoration by professional masons.
- Grievance committee members review and recommend to the Board any complaints or incidents caused by our dogs.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for the committee, please let us know by calling the Gatehouse at 202-543-0539 or email to grrr@congressionalcemetery.org.
